Hi Stuart - All you have to do is visit cryptome.org and you'll see exactly how the government keeps track of data on the internet. Every piece of data privately aggregated by corporations like Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, ATT, etc... is available to the government at little cost. Or, you could consult the Government Accountability Office's 2007 report on some of the data mining programs currently underway at the Department of Homeland Security (I discussed the report a bit, and linked to it in this post).

To your second point - whether or not people setup email accounts with fake names is irrelevant. Even with a fake name there is a whole range of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) that is still aggregated which alone could still identify you. Combine this information with the PII in other databases, and you can almost certainly be identified. You can consult Greg Conti's "Googling Security" and Paul Ohm's "Broken Promises of Privacy: Responding to the Surprising Failure of Anonymization" for a detailed account of how this works.

Thanks for the comment!

I don't really see how the government can keep track of data on the internet. Many people set up extra email accounts in fake names for a lot of the stuff they do.

As Balzac said, "Le secret des grandes fortunes sans cause apparent est un crime oubli, parce qu'il a ete proprement fait." In this case the cause is becoming apparent and not so properly done. They paid up the ladder, not so much down. So much for lousy tippers!

You're absolutely right about being in a plutocracy - but what I find interesting is the 'why' and 'how' part. A lot of what's keeping the world disconnected are conscious political decisions made by an extreme few - not even the full 20% that may be wired. Those of us wired, particularly in the industrialized global north, should demand more involvement in the current structure in order to expand connectivity to those disconnected. There was a lot of talk in the mid 90s about "public internet access" but I haven't heard much recently.

“why doesn’t a direct democracy exist?”. 'Cause, as happened with the Greeks, more than 80% of the world population is not in the category of CITIZENS, in other words, they are not connected. Real democracy implies a huge population base to control politicians. Otherwise, we will have a plutocracy, as actually happens with internet access around the world. In strict sense, you and me are part of that plutocracy.

Cool blog!

I've always thought that LSD and some other psycho-active chemicals open our perception to all inputs and break through this 'finite capacity' literally stretching the capacity of the mind.
